Most of us have seen Titanic. Most of us have also seen that set of episodes from Pokemon where the S.S. Anne sinks. I'm sure there are other good movie and tv examples of boats going down, but those two should be enough for everyone to get the idea of this meme. Sinking ships aren't fun for those involved in them, but they're definitely fascinating, and there are a lot of possibilities to be explored.

He should have known. He should have said no. Never again was he ever traveling somewhere which included traveling across water. He should have known something like this would happen. Izumo had assured him that it would be fine, that it was a big and strong ship, that wouldn't break. But all of it was wrong, nothing was alright, not any more. And they were far out in the sea or ocean or whatever the hell it was. There was too much water, just too damn much of it. He didn't like it before, but now?

He was desperate. So desperate that he didn't even bother hiding that he is completely terrified, because he's sinking like a stone. He can't swim, Izumo knew that Oguna couldn't swim, so he shouldn't have dragged him along on this trip in the first place. And now he was sinking because he was part earth, and not only flesh and bones.

Sure he had been lucky to get hold of a wooden plank, but his body had more weight than the plank actually liked, and Oguna was afraid that if his head got under the water surface, he wouldn't be able to get back up again. And it scared him so much that he was unable to form any thoughts other than frantic pleas to the plank to please! don't sink!

Sure, you can never be completely sure if something was going to happen on the sea, but the same thing applied to every place. He had faced far less dangers on the sea than he had in other places though, and he could count the times had been on a close to sinking ship on one hand.

It had never actually sunk though.

He felt bad for Oguna, he knew this would be hell for him. Judging by the look on his face, it was beyond that. He looked almost like Izumo had, the time he had learned how to swim, though the situation was entirely different. He'd never seen Oguna look like that before, but he didn't let himself think about that now. This wasn't the time to think about things like that, he had more important things to do. Like making sure Oguna stayed above water.

Treading water, he pushed his hands against the bottom of the plank. It made himself get a little bit deeper undderwater, but at least he knew how to swim without a problem. "Oguna! Stay still and just concentrate on breathing. It'll be fine."

That was fine, Izumo could give him one. It was very far from fun being in situations like this, and he was the reason why Oguna had been there. He could see that his words did nothing to help Oguna, so he decided on another approach.

"Hey, let me tell you about this time when I still lived with my family." Oguna didn't know much about his past, he knew that, and right now, if it helped even a little, it was a good thing that he hadn't told him anything before. "I grew up in the desert, and there's these special tents we lived in, that are better built to put up on the sand. You don't need the strings and all that."

While he spoke, he started to slowly move them toward other pieces of the ship, eyes looking behind Oguna for the biggest piece. "One time when there was a sandstorm, we woke up with the tents upside down and we found a kid my age at the bottom of a pile of adults. I remember laughing so much at his face when he was under there." He was six at the time, and it had been one of the most hilarious things to wake up to.

Oh, jackpot! At least as much as you could get in this situation, but he had gotten what he was aiming for; a reaction, something to distract him for even a moment. "Mmm, I just felt like telling you. I've got a lot of stories you haven't heard."

He kept on slowly making their way toward the remains of the ship, starting on another story. He kept his voice easygoing and conversational. "Do you know how I learned how to read and write? I was your age, you know."

Izumo blatantly ignored Oguna's words, and started to tell him anyway. "So, you're...fifteen-seventeen, something like that, right? When I grew up we didn't exaclty have scrolls or things like that around, so I never learned it. But this time when I was seventeen I got caught by some people who were taking care of homeless kids," Taken care of might not have been the proper word for it, but he didn't feel like going into that at the moment. He was just concentrating on telling the story and moving closer toward that big chunk of ship.

"I met a girl there, who knew how to read, and we built a plan to get them in trouble that included a lot of scrolls. I ended up learning a few of the kanji there, and when we got away we travelled together in a group for a while, and she taught several of us to read."

Finally they reached the remains he had been going for, and he moved them around so it nearly bumped against Oguna, but not enough to. "There, get up on this one instead."

Izumo took a hold of the plank Oguna had been holding onto with one hand. "Stay there, I'll just leave this." He knew Oguna couldn't go anywhere, yes, but working on getting him annoyed enough to distract him seemed like a good idea. The piece wasn't sturdy enough to hold both of them, so he would just have to prop it up with stray pieces in the meantime.

He dived under the surface and in beneath the piece Oguna was currently on. He had good lungs, so it was no problem staying under long enough to get it to stick a little better than had he just placed it loosely underneath. When he resurfaced he flashed Oguna a grin, picking up from where he was before. "So anyway, thats how I learned how to read."

Izumo pushed his sopping hair out of his face, propping himself up on the side of the wreckage piece. "If I do it again it'll be harder for you to fall off."

He scanned the water for more pieces. "Tell me if you see any more planks and I'll get it."

"I will, promise. This isn't my first time in a situation like this." He reached up to ruffle Oguna's hair. "Don't worry, I'll get you out of this."

Izumo laughed, kicking his legs to move them forward. If they got even a little bit closer to land while looking for more pieces of wood, it'd be great. "How about this; I take us pretty close to any left-overs and I go get it where you can see me."

It might be a bit slower due to the heavier weight and not wanting to wear himself out too fast, but a few minutes later he finds another piece. This one looks good enough to use as an oar. "I'll get that one over there, okay?" And off he goes, but it doesn't take him long to come back, reaching it out for Oguna to take. "Here, take it."
